A
magnificent largely unspoilt medieval castle,
approached up an unmade road, on a steep hill above the Orcia
Valley, the views "are wondrous".
'Strict planning regulations have saved it from signs, unsightly
wires and other hotel paraphernalia', said a visitor who found
the set-up 'delightful, peaceful and private, amazing value'
and welcome helpful. The lesser-known area of Tuscany south
of Siena makes a delightful discovery and
the variety of landscape within an 5 kms
drive provides one of the most fascinating excursions
in the region. Besides the charming hilltowns of
San Quirico d'Orcia, Castiglione
d'Orcia, Pienza and Montalcino,
there are the abbeys of Monte Oliveto and
Sant'Antimo, plus the thermal baths of Bagno
Vignoni.
